#3 of 13 in Shopping in Cairns
Stay up late at Night Markets, popular with tourists from around the world. Open late each night of the week, these markets are a collection of stalls catering mainly to foreign travelers, with vendors selling clothes, handmade crafts, souvenirs, food, beverages, and jewelry. Inspired by similar markets found all around East Asia, Cairns’ night markets were created as a convenient way for local merchants to satisfy the growing tourist demand for inexpensive but well-made local products. Today, you can visit over 130 stalls at a pleasantly air-conditioned shopping center, located on the city’s popular Esplanade. • Plenty of stalls, selling lots of stuff, especially souvenirs, clothing etc. Worth a visit but wouldn’t go out of my way to go there.  more »
  • Thought we may be able to pick up some handmade souvenirs, but it was just a bunch of cheap crap. Not worth the time in my opinion.  more »
  • The night market is worth a visit but once is enough. Most of the stalls sold similar products at tourist prices. Food was fairly average and were mostly Asian, quite oily and again, tourist prices. A...  more »

  • A great place to shop for souvenir and to have an affordable meal, food court style. There are around 3 food stalls offering buffet meal in a plate; that's right just pay for the plate (different size at different price) and fill it up with any food until the plate is full. If you are not big eater, the "X Large" plate at $16.50 should allow you to take enough food for 2 adult.
  • One of the few good markets in Cairns. Very busy in the late evenings. Food stalls from all over the world. Curios and Chinese ware can be bought here at affordable rates. Massage centres and precious jewellery stalls too. Nice place to spend some time.
  • A real mix of good aboriginal art and handicrafts alongside some cheap and ritzy Chinese souvenirs. I personally prefer to buy local whenever I travel, even though it means paying a little bit more. At least I know that the local arts and crafts is being supported by my purchase. This time I bought a few boomerangs from Robbie who owns the aboriginal boomerang and didgeridoo store in the middle of the night market. The food is pretty touristy, catering primarily to the large Asian tourist market. It's cheap enough that you can try a few different things if you'd like. The massage parlors are prolific and pretty good and inexpensive. In summary, it's a nice place to kill a few hours, grab a quick bite and pick up some authentic souvenirs and get a great massage. Afterwards you can cross the street and take a dip in the warm salt water lagoon.
  • Interesting place which attracts a lot of tourists. The glassblowing is the most exciting part. I don't appreciate being constantly asked for a massage. Business must be difficult in that realm, as the glassblower didn't have to offer any of their services to me.
  • This is a great place to take your visitors while they are in Cairns. A vast array of speciality stalls ranging from glass making to souvenirs. They also have several stalls for cheap massages so long as you don't take on there extras at $10 per heat pad. Very cosmopolitan and a must see for all visitors to the north.
