Night Markets, Cairns

#2 of 14 in Shopping in Cairns
Stay up late at Night Markets, popular with tourists from around the world. Open late each night of the week, these markets are a collection of stalls catering mainly to foreign travelers, with vendors selling clothes, handmade crafts, souvenirs, food, beverages, and jewelry. Inspired by similar markets found all around East Asia, Cairns’ night markets were created as a convenient way for local merchants to satisfy the growing tourist demand for inexpensive but well-made local products. Today, you can visit over 130 stalls at a pleasantly air-conditioned shopping center, located on the city’s popular Esplanade. • My partner and I were told to visit the Night Markets on our trip. We decided to eat at the food court and saw that there was a new fish and chip shop and wanted to try it out. It is honestly the best...  more »
  • Night markets in the Centre of Cairns where you can eat, buy souvenirs of all kinds, make you read your hand, make you cut your hair or, as we did, you massage the feet by minnows by soaking in a tub. Very nice place, busy, let us a ride.

  • Love this place. So many souvenir options at good prices. Definitely get some 3d post cards. You don't even need to mail them, keep them for yourselves or give them as gifts. I didn't buy all that I needed because I thought I could get things in Sydney, boy was I wrong. Sydney seems to be a few seasons behind. The shops open at 5pm so if you get here early just stroll along the beachwalk and people watch or have dinner in the food court. Buy everything that you need here, trust me....
  • A favourite place for tourists and locals alike with a great variety of stores including souvenirs, pearls, massage and a food court with lots of Asian food and a Coffee Club. Best place to score a cheap but great massage followed by a feed and a leisurely stroll along the Esplanade on a balmy evening. The sweet crepes are the stuff of legend and you will find great food outlets at both ends of the markets. Warning - the massage places will approach you 100% of the time, they're very competitive so if you're not interested in a massage just be prepared to be approached multiple times.
  • Love the hustle and bustle of the night markets. Vibrant atmosphere, great for picking up a souvenir or two! At of course typical touristy prices. Some good little finds. Has fast food/street food outlets at back.
  • Love going to explore the market when out on the esplanade. Cute stalls and some amazing things you can buy as gifts
  • Good to explore to get cheap foods and some souvenirs. But never eat the chinese food that you can put the food in a dish unlimited. Their presentation looks alright but it was the worst food that I've ever tried.

Where to stay in Cairns

Though Cairns seems to offer an endless selection of cozy rooms, most budget-friendly options remain fully booked through the high season, stretching from June to September. Reserve early if you want a hotel room packed with amenities, or look for alternative lodgings in the city's smaller inns. As the backpacker capital of northern Queensland, Cairns features dozens of economical hostels providing comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi. For something far more luxurious, look for centrally located rental apartments with spacious rooms and harbor views.
