Well-maintained paths leading up to the Cradle Mountain encircle Dove Lake Circuit, home to a variety of native wildlife, including wombats, anteaters, and pademelons (small marsupials). The habitat includes unique native plants, such as the Tasmanian deciduous beach, tussock grasses, snow gums, and pencil pines. Formed by glaciation, this lake is now part of the protected Heritage Wilderness Area, which you can visit at the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. You can stroll around the lake on your own or join a long guided walk, such as the six-day Overland Track to the southern edge of this wilderness. Remember to bring waterproof clothes, as it rains almost 300 days a year in this area. • Classic round the lake walk... we started at Ronny's Creek with a quick detour up to Walheim (well worth the effort!) to see the original version of tourist accommodation in Cradle Mountain. The lake ...  more »
  • This was a very good walk. Plenty of great scenery while walking on a well defined track. Leave your car at the main centre and use the shuttle to hop on and off for various walks.  more »
  • This is not an easy walk. We thought lakeside - but not. Up and down 1000's steps. Very few resting places. They say 2-3 hours, close to 3. Take everything with you - WATER!!!  more »

  • Beautiful... bring your snack along and have a break along the way. There's a picnic table bench with fantastic views 2/3 of the way in the dove lake loop walk when you do it clockwise. (Easier direction).
  • We did the Dove Lake circuit walk today. Beautiful scenery. We loved the shuttle bus service. The driver provided plenty of nice descriptions and information on Cradle Mountain. The walk was very well maintained. We were happy to not observe any littering during our walk. We will go again.
  • A very beautiful walk around Dove Lake with a gorgeous view of Cradle Mountain all the way. The full circuit is listed as 1 to 3 hours' walk. We walked it at the pace of a three year old and it took 4.5 hours with a couple of short stops. You can do a much shorter walk to the boat sheds and have a paddle if you prefer. But the long walk is gorgeous with lots of different sights and not too taxing - a few uneven steps to watch out for.
  • Awesome trail with some of the best scenery available in Tasmania. We walked Dove Lake and took plenty of time to take in the nature around us. It's a gentle walk but allow a few hours to appreciate the scenery. As we were there the snow capped mountains and Cradle Mountain created their own waterfalls as the snows melted, just majestic. My only regret was I had planned to stay in this area only one day. Should have stayed at least a week.
  • Walking clockwise around this 6klm Circuit has to be one of the best walks anywhere. It is an easy walk around a pristine lake with great views from Glacier Rock, all the while the towering spires of Cradle Mountain loom above. It is a photographers dream, not to mention the iconic Boat Shed. The track is very well laid out, much of it on boardwalk, a few uphill sections but easily achievable in about 2 hours.
