Lake McKenzie, Fraser Island

4.9
#1 of 38 in Parks in Fraser Coast
The jewel of Fraser Island is Lake McKenzie, famous for its crystal blue waters and white sands. The area surrounding the lake is the most popular tourist attraction on the island, so it can get crowded during the middle of the day in peak season. The sands around the lake are composed of white silica, and the lake's purity makes it unsuitable for most species. You can swim in this clean water, relax on the sandy beach, or explore the forest surrounding it. A camping area and a picnic area are nearby, along with barbecues. Near the lake is a popular bush trail, where you can see giant fern trees. A visit to Lake McKenzie represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Fraser Island tour planner to plot your vacation.

  • Pretty fresh water lake, silky smooth to swim in! Beautiful soft white sand but not much wildlife in the lake. Plenty of birds around .  more »
  • Well worth sending a half day at for sun and swimming. The clear waters and the softness of the water make this place remarkable.  more »
  • It’s a beautiful place, we had a wonderfully refreshing swim in the lake which is salt free, they ask that you don’t have sunscreen on to pollute the water and that’s ok as you can’t stay too long if ...  more »

  • Great place to visit and swim, in fact the whole of Fraser Island is an amazing place and we'll worth a visit. We went with a local guide in his 4 wheel drive, and it was absolutely fabulous, one of the best trips ever, he was do knowledgeable, about the island and Australia. By going with him we felt safer, plus we saw alot more than if we drove ourselves. This is not an island to drive your city 4 wheels drives on , at best your going to damage them, at worst...people die from toppling their vehicles. Best trip ever.
  • Absolutely beautiful. Fresh water lake on the largest sand island. After swimming in the lake, your hair and skin feel soft and revitalised. A definite must see.
  • A lovely lake surrounded by sand (The whole of Fraser Island is sand but its still cool!) A great place to relax in the water or on the beach facing it
  • This place is amazing! The drive in is rough, so a high clearance 4wd is required (as per the rest of the island). There are toilets at the top as well fenced off eating areas to keep the dingos out. Lake McKenzie is just a beautiful spot to spend the day with the young ones.
  • It's a rainwater lake. There's no streams or rivers just pure rainwater in the lake plus it can't drain away because the base is sand and impervious organic matter. That's what makes swimming in the lake so different. You have to try it to know what I mean. Plus it makes your skin feel clean and for me my whole body felt great after. It cleans jewellery and watches too. Plenty of changing facilities and clean toilet/showers. We haven't seen any turtles here but apparently they're here. The sand is pure and beautiful to walk on.
