Lake McKenzie, Fraser Island

4.9
#1 of 38 in Parks in Fraser Coast
The jewel of Fraser Island is Lake McKenzie, famous for its crystal blue waters and white sands. The area surrounding the lake is the most popular tourist attraction on the island, so it can get crowded during the middle of the day in peak season. The sands around the lake are composed of white silica, and the lake's purity makes it unsuitable for most species. You can swim in this clean water, relax on the sandy beach, or explore the forest surrounding it. A camping area and a picnic area are nearby, along with barbecues. Near the lake is a popular bush trail, where you can see giant fern trees. A visit to Lake McKenzie represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Fraser Island tour planner to plot your vacation.

  • The day we visited was very windy and the wind made it chilly but we still got in the water. It wasn’t as clear under the water that day because of the wind and rain from earlier but it was still beau...  more »

  • It's a rainwater lake. There's no streams or rivers just pure rainwater in the lake plus it can't drain away because the base is sand and impervious organic matter. That's what makes swimming in the lake so different. You have to try it to know what I mean. Plus it makes your skin feel clean and for me my whole body felt great after. It cleans jewellery and watches too. Plenty of changing facilities and clean toilet/showers. We haven't seen any turtles here but apparently they're here. The sand is pure and beautiful to walk on.
  • First time I came here was in July and the water was crystal clear and hardly anyone around this gorgeous lake. Second time was high tourist season (January). Still amazing, just a bit busier and the water was hazy.
  • Must do in Fraser: rainwater lake, transparent and fresh Arrive early to avoid people (and bring sunscreen) and enjoy the breathtaking view!
  • Just beautiful. Excellent facilities also, dingo-proof area for picnic stop (no food can be taken to the lake). Take the scenic lakes drive to the South for 3 more beautiful lakes and wildflowers in late Winter/early Spring down near Dili Village.
  • I have never seen such a clear blue lake before in my life. It is just amazing. If someone visits Fraser Island it is a must for the "do do list". It's really fantastic.
