Formerly a workhouse for female convicts in the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is now a museum listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Operational between 1828 and 1856, the factory was an important part of the forced migration of convicts and global developments associated with punishment and reform. The site demonstrates how Britain used penal transportation to expand its sphere of influence, as well as to punish female convicts. • This place was once a prison for women, and it became a historic site on the history of these poor ladies. On the other hand, little things to visit remains and the interest is restricted, particularly for foreign tourists.

  • Didn't have time to go to Port Arthur, so came here. A 40 minute walk from the centre. Not too much to see. An hour is more than enough unless you sign up for the tour. Sad to hear the reasons for exp...  more »

  • We visited the site this week and also visited the Hobart Chapel and Port Arthur. The Cascade Female Factory is a must visit, if you are interested in the history of convicts in Australia. It is also a must, to book the "Her Story" play, as it brings history to life and really explains how they were treated, why they came here and how harsh and unfair the penalties were back then. Anne, our tour guide, was awesome and really has a passion for the history of convicts and is very knowledgeable. Chris and Judith are really awesome actors and were the highlight of all of our visits to the three convict sites we have visited in Tasmania. You have to see this, if you are also going to Port Arthu
  • This is s really good historic experience. However as so little of the original building remains; the experience requires you to take one of the tours. The volunteer guide we had was very knowledgeable.
  • Well worth a visit to have a greater understanding of the life of a female convict. John our guide was fantastic and so great at explaning the history. He had so much information. The guided tour is a must. Totally recommended.
  • Spent the morning to early afternoon going to Mt Wellington and then to the Cascades Female Factory. Interesting history lesson worth the $15 for the tour. The design of the place to represent and understand what it used to be was amazing given it the inner walls no longer exist. Wish that history would have stayed, but an imagination can make it even more interesting with some great story telling by the guide.
  • We did the historic tour. Well worth the $15 dollars as it helps build a better understanding of what is actually left of the factory. The guide was friendly, well informed and knew how to build a good story. Great history lesson.
