Formerly a workhouse for female convicts in the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is now a museum listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Operational between 1828 and 1856, the factory was an important part of the forced migration of convicts and global developments associated with punishment and reform. The site demonstrates how Britain used penal transportation to expand its sphere of influence, as well as to punish female convicts. Guided tours include short dramatic performances presenting the story of the convicts and their guardians. • The guided tour was great - our guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She was also happy to answer any questions we had. I highly recommend the tour, as it provides a lot of historical information on the Factory, and paints an accurate picture of what life would have been like for the incarcerated women. "Her Story" was fantastic. It adds an emotional layer to the history of the Factory. I recommend both tours.
  • I took the Heritage Tour, and our guide John, is one of the best tour guides I ever joined with! Without the tour, you won't be able to take in the full scope of the brutal stories that took place in this female prison. I was hooked by the guided talk from start to finish. I really recommend taking the tour and not just taking the entrance pass. It was worth it!
  • We did a guided tour and were amazed how passionate and knowledgeable our guide was. Later we were impressed again as we did the theatre show "Her Story" performed by two actors playing the role of three people. Highly recommend both.
  • To fully appreciate this place, and those that passed through here, take the tour. Provides an important bookend for Pt Arthur. Tasmania is to be commended for the way they have recognised to importance of keeping these stories of our beginnings alive and unvarnished.
  • The re enactment was Very moving. Ayone who has descendants who survived that place should be proud and grateful. Go there. Hear the Women's stories. I will always remember my visit
