Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Kuranda

4.4
#1 of 8 in Parks in Kuranda
Wear bright colors to entice butterflies to land on you at Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, situated in the heart of the city. This popular aviary is home to more than 1,500 tropical butterflies indigenous to Australia. Its impressive collection has it earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the country's largest butterfly exhibit. The sanctuary rears only butterflies native to Australia, and the adjoining lab breeds about 30,000 caterpillars each year. Many visitors use a local trick of smearing honey on their hands to attract butterflies and then quickly snap photos before they take flight again. You can do that, or simply take a long walk along the sanctuary's many walkways, surrounded by flowers, trees, and hundreds of colorful insects. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Kuranda holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The butterfly exhibit is a nice activity. Unfortunately the Ulysses are down in numbers and there were only a couple of Birdwings. Still a great family experience.  more »
  • A little drizzly cold day to visit. To locate the Ulisses waited for about two hours. Valet, even today I haven't seen, and said, is desperately looking for not found. Mooncraft was away again, more stuff going on I saw just one dog and hear what I saw today, but cold and then close wings, taking a break from. I think closing wings and Brown so hard to find, and was told. Once and still the top or bottom to ask told than on the back, also looked a bit. After all did not find unfortunately. It is good to go because it was seen, however, there are a lot of other beautiful butterfly. Ulisses aimed at better is recommended that hot on warm days, weather permitting, will be visiting.

  • A worthwhile visit, despite being a fairly costly entrance fee. Go into the main room and there will be a tremendous number of colourful butterflies feeding on the nectar of tons of flowers. The guides are very informative and give tours at no added cost. There is an interesting hatchery for caterpillars and lots of informative information. My wife loved it, and it seemed like all of the kids in there loved it as well. A worthwhile stop after riding the cable cars!
  • Get up close to lots of butterflies including the stunning Ulysses. My tip, if you want the butterflies to land on you, is to wear a hat. There is a breeding lab you can visit and see butterflies and moths up close under a microscope. Their wings are actually made of tiny scales! On the way out, there is a stunning display of mounted butterflies from around the world. We didn't spend long here- about half an hour, but it was a fun experience
  • An excellent exhibition, just be sure to go during the heat of the day to see lots of butterflies. Staff are great, especially Carol on the front desk, she's fantastic. Best value is to combine the visit with the multi park pass they have on offer.
  • Quite an experience to be surrounded by amazing butterflies. Recommend jumping on the free tour which gives an insight into what the buttery team get to. The giant moths are a must as well.
  • Great place to visit. Specially for kids however not as many butterflys as you would expect and they dont just land on you as seen in the photos. It takes time and the ability to stand dead still for as long as it takes.
