Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Kuranda

#1 of 8 in Parks in Kuranda
Wear bright colors to entice butterflies to land on you at Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, situated in the heart of the city. This popular aviary is home to more than 1,500 tropical butterflies indigenous to Australia. Its impressive collection has it earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the country's largest butterfly exhibit. The sanctuary rears only butterflies native to Australia, and the adjoining lab breeds about 30,000 caterpillars each year. Many visitors use a local trick of smearing honey on their hands to attract butterflies and then quickly snap photos before they take flight again. You can do that, or simply take a long walk along the sanctuary's many walkways, surrounded by flowers, trees, and hundreds of colorful insects. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Kuranda holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Really nice place to visit. It is quite a small sanctuary but you can also have a look inside at the labs which makes it interesting. You do need to travel to get here, but it is well worth it!!!  more »

  • A worthwhile visit, despite being a fairly costly entrance fee. Go into the main room and there will be a tremendous number of colourful butterflies feeding on the nectar of tons of flowers. The guides are very informative and give tours at no added cost. There is an interesting hatchery for caterpillars and lots of informative information. My wife loved it, and it seemed like all of the kids in there loved it as well. A worthwhile stop after riding the cable cars!
  • Beautiful, peaceful place to visit. The tour guide was informative and clearly passionate about her work with Butterflies. I spent a long while here, just taking in the serene environment.
  • Prepare to get up close and very personal with an impressive collection of regional butterflies. Offering scheduled tours with informative talks and viewing access to their impressive breeding laboratory.
  • When we arrived in Kuranda by train we decided to go straight to the Butterfly sanctuary and at first I thought we would only be there a short time but upon entering we were instantly captivated by so many beautiful butterflies. We toured the place multiple times because each time we circulated we would see different butterflies. The tour into the caterpillar breeding lab was very interesting. I have included a few of my pretty pictures just to give you a glimpse of what its like. Well worth the money- highly recommend this place!
  • Nice venue. Not as many male Ulysses as I expected. More at home in Cairns. But on a whole. Nice venue, well set out. Loads of butterflies. Amazingly learned butterfly staff. Breeding and nurturing. Great job. Good venue and worth the visit.
