City Park, Launceston

#Nature / Park, #Must See
City Park is a heritage park containing the city's botanic gardens, radio museum, gallery of wood design and furniture, and an enclosed colony of macaque monkeys. The park's monorail operates on most days and is a popular tourist attraction, taking visitors around the area's most notable landmarks. The most prominent buildings at this location are Albert Hall, which was built in 1891; a convention center; and the studios of City Park Radio. The studios are located inside a cottage that once served as the park caretakers' home, and still boast one of the oldest wisteria wines in Australia, planted in 1837. • The day we went was unusually hot for Launceston so the the Monkeys were subdued, but it was still possible to watch the family interactions between them. There were quite a few very young monkeys at ...  more »
  • It is such a beautiful park that is well kept and I love the flowers. It's good the cafe is open again. I just live the monkeys and have fond memories of taking our children to see them. Magical place...  more »
  • Serene spot with a great coffee bar. We needed some down time after flying in from Victoria and this little park provided the right environment.  more »

  • Beautiful park in the city center, includes a couple of pagodas, a conservatory, duck pond, and even a display of Japanese monkeys (note: monkeys can be viewed till 4pm, so plan your visit accurately). Perfect for a stroll in tranquility or a picnic. The only downside is that the road is nearby, so you'll still hear cars driving by. Just beside the park is the national automobile museum, which is also worth a visit if you have kids.
  • Beautiful city park, with amazing building all well kept! A conservatory, etc... There is also a kids playground with lots of space and all very well protected for the small.and the bigger children. The macaque building closes at 4.30pm, in case you want to visit, make sure you reach there before 4.30pm
  • Wow. What an amazing park. The grounds are so pretty and clean and has great facilities. We went on the little train, who I think Santa was driving it, and we also visited the monkeys. Such an amazing place to see.
  • A casual bike ride, viewing of enclosed monkeys (great for the little one, morally challenging for the adults), then through the grand, open parkland and conservatory to finish in the children's playground. The playground is one of the best in Launceston; open, under the shade of trees, full of play equipment and equiped with a toddler's toilet and change table.
  • A lush green park, well manicured with large area's of soft grass and big trees with nice canopies for cover. An awesome play area for the kids and a monkey enclosure that house 2 dozen Japanese marques monkeys that look like they are having a blast and living a good life.

Where to stay in Launceston

Many visitors to Launceston choose to settle into one of the area's spacious rental apartments, which offer large rooms and plenty of privacy. Equally comfortable, the city's centrally located four-star hotels include onsite restaurants and air-conditioned rooms with flat-screen TVs and satellite channels. A less expensive alternative, Launceston's inns provide a convenient base for backpackers and causal travelers arriving without prior reservations. If you want something atmospheric and historical, look for guesthouses located in well-preserved Georgian and Victorian buildings.
