Richmond Bridge, Richmond

#1 of 19 in Things to do in Richmond
The country's oldest bridge still in use, Richmond Bridge remains a testament to Tasmania's forced migration heritage. The sandstone arched structure was built by convicts between 1823 and 1825. An unsolved murder marked the early bridge's history, when a notorious prison guard fell asleep drunk on the bridge and was pushed off its edge by presumably one or more of the prisoners. Pack some snacks for a picnic on the grassy riverbank underneath this national heritage site. • Picturesque spot for photo lovers. The bridge is in wonderful condition and the surrounding trees, river and grasses makes it perfect for photos. Ducks and swans live here and may wander up to you for food. Some table and chairs here for picnics. Couldn’t find toilet facilities though.
  • A picturesque and serene stop on your journey around Tasmania. Impressive to think this structure was built by unskilled convicts almost 200 years ago! Also check out the nearby church and graveyard which I believe are amongst the oldest in Australia. Richmond itself is a cute little town and worthy of a visit.
  • Absolutely beautiful bridge. The walk along the river is a must do. Very picturesque. Stores and restaurants nearby are great as well.
  • Such a beautiful place full of old world charm. The bridge adds its own charm to this delightful town.
  • Worth the time to check out this amazing bridge and town. Just live the architecture. Don't change a thing!
