Penguin Island, Rockingham

4.0
Situated inside the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Penguin Island is home to a colony of little penguins, the largest population of birds in Western Australia. Regular ferries carry tourists to and from the island, and access is also available by private boat. Only a small population of captive penguins can be viewed, but the island offers many other sights, including nesting seabirds and a large colony of pelicans, numbering nearly 500 birds. You can also swim, snorkel, take kite-boarding lessons, join kayaking tours, or simply enjoy a picnic. Remember to take your own food and drink, as none can be purchased on the island. • We loved it here. Although it seems a bit on the pricey side for the ferry, the kids had a great time. It's best to get a window seat so they can see out at the fantastic view on the ferry. Don't forget to pack a picnic if staying for lunch, although there is a cafe at the mainland, because on the island there are no shops. If you want to see the penguins, you will needed to purchase the discovery centre passes too. Great day out.
  • Amazing experience that our family enjoyed. Allow lots of time to enjoy the whole island.
  • Small island you can walk around. Friendly staff, lots of wildlife to see. Picnic area with shade. Penguins in the rescue centre are great to see at feeding time.
  • The wacky weather shortened our day but we had a lovely walk around the island spotting any wildlife braving the antarctic gale, even found a few baby terns & young gulls. We even learnt that the rescued penguins can form a same sex pairing & successfully hatch & raise a chick when given an egg!
  • Penguin island is a great day out for the whole family. It starts with a 5 minute ferry ride across to the island and when you arrive you can explore anywhere on the island. You can get up close with Little penguins at the discovery centre or see the wild bigger penguins when walking around. The beaches there are beautiful and definite take goggles or snorkelling gear if you do go. There are many animals to see including dolphins and whales (around summer months), fish, sting rays and of course the penguins. You can explore the nature trails and boardwalks taking in the spectacular views or just relax on the clean and safe beaches. In September and October pelicans and other sea birds lay their eggs on the island and you can see their chicks hatching. Their are also a variety of other cruises and walks you can do with a tour guide but they do cut extra money. The ferry is quite costly for a 5 minute ride but overall the island has amazing beaches and very cute penguines.
