Coogee Beach, Sydney

4.6
#3 of 24 in Beaches in Sydney
Second only to Bondi in popularity, Coogee Beach is suitable for swimming, relaxing in the sun, and picnicking. Nearby is a busy shopping and dining area, where you can also find hotel accommodations if you choose to stay longer in this quaint part of the city. Though this part of the coast is famous for its dangerous shore breaks, an ocean pool lies at the southern end of the beach in a sheltered area safe for swimming. Lifeguards are on duty daily and on the Wedding Cake Island, rising out of the water about 400 m (1,300 ft) offshore. This small island forms a rocky reef that helps shelter the beach and creates an area safe for swimming Make Coogee Beach a part of your Sydney vacation plans using our Sydney day trip planning tool .

  • Lovely beach with nice white sand and a smaller lake /lagoon which is quite safe. There are rocks /shelter on one side with plenty of rocky areas /paths to walk around. Not many bars/restaurants which ...  more »
  • This is a great family oriented beach. But if you want a little more variety, and interesting swimming (including some snorkeling) you might want to move one cove to the north, Gordon's Bay.  more »
  • A little bit further out than Bondi but you can pick up a bus from Circular Quay and it will take you right there. The beach is better. The people are nicer but there just isn't as many food/souvenir/...  more »

  • Coogee Beach is a wonderful family beach, it is close to public transport, and shops, restaurants and pubs. It has public amenities and lovely grass foreshore overlooking the soft, fine white sand beach. Surf: Coogee has waves and currents, although it is uncommon for these to be large enough to trouble anyone with at least a medium swimming ability.
  • Nice views to take pictures and wonderfull beaches. Its perfect destination for an evening walk or a place you can enjoy sunshine. Most people/maps/visitors information will be able to tell you how to find the path, it is not hard. Note : It gets really windy so be sure to bring a windbreaker or a jumper that can warm you
  • Very lively and one of the important beach of Sydney. This beach is very famous in youngsters. Every weekend this beach is completely pack, there is little reserve beside beach which is good for children for playing. There are few bars and pubs next to beach which is always on weekends. If you have good company of friends and family do visit this beach in night time.
  • Great smaller beach. Not as busy as some, easier to get to from the city than all other beaches. Well, maybe Manly is as easy. And free parking.
  • I really like that cafes and restaurants are so close to the beach - it’s like Bondi Beach just smaller, but can be in summer as crowded as other beaches too. I guess because public transport is very good in this area and you have a nice balance between the sand-area close to the water and the green with much more shade :)

Where to stay in Sydney

Sydney offers visitors hundreds of lodging options in its central area, with choices suitable for most budgets. As expected in a major tourist destination, harbor views play a major role in determining room prices. Expect to pay more for ocean-view suites, especially if you visit at the peak of the tourist season or around big city events. If you don't need to stay in the center of Sydney, consider budget-friendly hotels near the airport, or look for smaller roadside motels in the city's South West neighborhood.
