Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Woolmers Estate and Entally Estate are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Get outdoors at Cataract Gorge Reserve and The Tamar Valley. Explore Launceston's surroundings by going to Australian Axeman's Hall of Fame (in Latrobe), Platypus House (in Beauty Point) and Holm Oak Vineyards (in Rowella). Next up on the itinerary: kick back and relax at Coles Beach, stroll through City Park, get great views at Freelands Lookout, and learn about winemaking at Pipers Brook Vineyard.

For traveler tips, photos, ratings, and more tourist information, refer to the Launceston trip planner.

Sydney to Launceston is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of train, ferry, and bus. Prepare for little chillier weather when traveling from Sydney in January: high temperatures in Launceston hover around 28°C and lows are around 12°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 16th (Wed) so you can go by car to Hobart.
