Lent iconic status as a result of its famous bridge and opera house, Sydney has a down-to-earth charm that enhances its spectacular setting and functional efficiency.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Bondi Beach and Coogee Beach. Get outdoors at Bondi to Coogee Beach Coastal Walk and Watson's Bay. Spend the 15th (Sun) exploring nature at Sydney Harbour National Park. There's still lots to do: enjoy the sand and surf at Manly Beach, snap pictures at Sydney Harbour Bridge, tour the pleasant surroundings at Clovelly, and catch a live performance at Sydney Opera House.

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Visiting Trinity Beach and Palm Cove Beach will get you outdoors. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas and Australian Butterfly Sanctuary. Change things up with these side-trips from Cairns: Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove) and Davies Creek National Park (in Mareeba). Spend the 18th (Wed) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. Named after Lord Byron's grandfather, Byron Bay is not only famous as the easternmost point of Australia, but even more so as one of the liveliest vacation spots in the country.
You'll explore the less-touristy side of things at Burleigh Heads Beach and Cape Byron Walking Track. Visiting Coolangatta Beach and Whian Whian State Conservation Area will get you outdoors. You'll find plenty of places to visit near Byron Bay: Kirra Beach (in Coolangatta) and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary (in Currumbin). Getting from Cairns to Byron Bay by combination of flight and bus takes about 4.5 hours. Other options: drive; or do a combination of train and bus. Expect a bit cooler weather when traveling from Cairns in July: highs in Byron Bay hover around 24°C, while lows dip to 7°C. On the 24th (Tue), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can drive to Noosa.
