The state of Victoria crown jewel, Melbourne boasts shaded streets, leafy residential neighborhoods, vibrant street life, and a picturesque city center.
Change things up with a short trip to Werribee Open Range Zoo in Werribee (about 42 minutes away). Dedicate the 7th (Thu) to wine at some of the top wineries in the area. There's lots more to do: take in nature's colorful creations at Royal Botanic Gardens, explore the world behind art at National Gallery of Victoria, admire nature's wide array of creatures at Melbourne Zoo, and enjoy breathtaking views from Eureka Skydeck 88.

Fly from Sydney to Melbourne in 3.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of train and flight; or drive. Traveling from Sydney in June, expect Melbourne to be slightly colder, temps between 16°C and 6°C. On the 8th (Fri), wrap the sightseeing up by early afternoon so you can travel to Cairns.

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Port Douglas (Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas & Safaris) and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove). Spend the 11th (Mon) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour.
