A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Palm Cove Beach and Trinity Beach. Get outdoors at Scuba & Snorkeling and Daintree National Park. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Safaris (in Port Douglas) and Hartley's Crocodile Adventures (in Palm Cove). Queensland’s biggest town and state capital, Brisbane has an attractive, manicured image based around its riverside aesthetic as well as the contrast between its high-rise center and extensive urban greenery.
Visit Burleigh Heads Beach and Moffat Beach for some beach relaxation. Take a break from the city and head to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary and Captain Cook Highway. Go for a jaunt from Brisbane to Wacol to see Wolston Farmhouse about 34 minutes away. There's lots more to do: let the kids burn off some steam at South Bank Parklands, enjoy the sand and surf at Dicky Beach, explore the striking landscape of Burleigh Head National Park, and take some stellar pictures from Mount Coot-tha Lookout.
