Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
On the 2nd (Mon), identify plant and animal life at Cataract Gorge Reserve and then stop by Gourlay's Sweet Shop. On the next day, look for all kinds of wild species at Platypus House, look for gifts at Goaty Hill Wines, learn about winemaking at Holm Oak Vineyards, then do a tasting at Josef Chromy Cellar Door, and finally explore the galleries of Tasmanian Glassblowers.

Melbourne to Launceston is an approximately 4-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of ferry and car. Traveling from Melbourne in July, you can expect nighttime temperatures to be slightly colder in Launceston, with lows of 2°C. On the 4th (Wed), enjoy the sand and surf at Honeymoon Bay, kick back and relax at Coles Bay Jetty, and then explore and take pictures at Wineglass Bay Lookout.
