Adelaide Zoo, Adelaide

4.2
#1 of 7 in Zoos & Aquariums in South Australia
Gaze at over 1,800 animals covering more than 300 species at Adelaide Zoo. Australia's second oldest zoo and the only major city zoo running as a nonprofit offers exhibits of wildlife from four continents. At Immersion, walk through Southeast Asian jungle and come practically face-to-face with Sumatran Tigers and Orangutans. A behind-the-scenes tour brings you up close with a range of animals and into normally off-limits areas. Pay special attention to the former Elephant House and the entrance on Frome Road; both of these are on the National Trust of South Australia's architectural heritage list. • It's not overly cheap. However, it must cost a fortune to run and maintain a zoo. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The animal attractions are fantastic and there is a great variety. Kids love the big playground ideally situated next to a great cafe. For when you need a rest. Not something you will go to once a week but definitely worth going to a few times a year.
  • It's a great place to spend a day especially with kids. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Quite pricey to get in though so save up the pennies. I do understand the cost of upkeep I just worry that not everyone can afford to take a family.
  • Zoo is much smaller than I expected. The layout and paths are confusing, not well signposted or easy to follow around and ensure you don't miss things. Food is very overpriced. Gift shop had quite a variety of items, some reasonably priced, some very overpriced. I went on a hot day and more than half of the enclosures were empty and animals completely out of sight as they went out the back to sleep and escape the heat. I felt like I had been ripped off to pay to see the animals, it's a small zoo already, but with so many hiding from the heat it felt like a wasted day. On days above a certain temperature since they know many of the animals will be M.I.A (a staff member said it was normal when we commented about it) they should either reduce the price, offer for re-entry within a set period of time, or offer re-entry that is heavily discounted. Some enclosures seemed to be too small and with minimal stuff to keep the animals entertained and provide shelter/shade from the weather, and others were plenty big enough and they were more than adequate facilities for the animals. • Very well laid out and maintained zoo. Having visited a lot of zoo's previosly the main reason for this visit was to see the only 2 Giant Pandas in Australia. Gorgeous animals, slow moving, prefer their own company and regular supplies of fresh bamboo. Fun to watch....loved them. Zoo has fantastic volunteer guides. Souvenirs galore, coffee shop and on bus route.
  • I love coming to the zoo because i love to see all the animals, the staff are friendly and welcoming. But i found that last time the animals weren't as active as i hoped :'( so i can only assume that the animals had an off day. But i do very much love coming to the Zoo. Thanks to the Staff for taking good care of the animals.
