  • Founded in 1881, the Art Gallery of South Australia is home to one of South Australia's great art collections, housed in one of Adelaide's most beautiful buildings. Located at the heart of the cultural boulevard, North Terrace, between the South Australian Museum and University of Adelaide, the Art Gallery welcomes approximately 780,000 visitors each year. The Art Gallery of South Australia's collection includes approximately 42,000 works of art and design from Australia, Europe, North America and Asia. The collection features painting, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, textiles, ceramics, glass, metalwork, jewellery and an impressive representation of Australian furniture from colonial to contemporary. The Art Gallery's outstanding collection of 38,000 works of art comprises Australian, European, North American and Asian works including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, textiles, furniture, ceramics, metalwork and jewellery. The Art Gallery also houses a comprehensive collection of Australian art from the time of European settlement in the early nineteenth century to the present day, including one of the most important collections of Indigenous art. The European collection spans the Renaissance to today, and the Asian collection covers twelve countries with galleries dedicated to the art of Southeast Asia, India, Japan and the only dedicated Islamic gallery space in Australia.
  • The South Australian Art Gallery offers a range of interesting experiences for art goers throughout the year. It's facilities are relatively modern and it's infrastructure has supported some very interesting installations. Recently it has been expanding it's historical collection and a visit can serve as a great day out of the house, especially when the biennial or a major exhibition is on. I would love to see the gallery expand it's scope even further with the types of artwork it might take into it's collection. it's well worth a visit for any history or art lover. I would recommend this establishment.
  • Took 5, year 5 students, to see the amazing exhibition... their infectious joy and wanting to share it with strangers was outstanding. These boys are from the country and every person they met they said hello...how is your day..hope the rest of your day is great...glad to meet you...etc Every single person they spoke to responded positively...smiling enjoying the experience of sharing happiness and a pure joy in life! They are inspiring young boys.
  • Now, I love art. So an art gallery to me is always on the top five things to do in any capital city. I must however say, that Adelaide is so very lucky to have the Art Gallery and the University side by side because the uni is just as beautiful. I just love this precinct. 5 minutes walk either way from the gallery and you will find some interesting buildings/scenes. Depending on love of art, the art gallery can take from 20mins to 2 hours.
  • So many favourite pieces here - just a delight. So much to explore, or drop for a brief and uplifting visit. Some creative and quirky things for junior art lovers to enjoy too. Beautiful building. Friendly, helpful staff and guides too.
