Litchfield National Park, Batchelor

#1 of 6 in Things to do in Batchelor
Originally home to the aboriginal Wagait people, Litchfield National Park is noted for its monsoon rainforest and well-marked trails leading to a number of waterfalls. Many of the waterfalls create small streams and natural pools suitable for swimming and diving. The area abounds in wildlife and includes several sites where you can observe rare colonies of native bat species. Be sure to drop by the historic Blyth Homestead, built in 1929 and now serving as an educational reminder of the tough conditions the early settlers of these remote areas faced. Nearby, you can also visit huge termite mounds, erected by thousands of insects with a north-south orientation to control temperature inside their habitat. Designated campgrounds are available for visitors planning to participate in longer bushwalks. Litchfield National Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Batchelor Edition.

  • We were delighted with our stay at Litchfield! We were able to take advantage of two natural swimming pools, beautiful, at the feet of waterfalls and accessible without the need of a great hike. Relax and enjoy the beautiful weather of the Northern Territory.

  • One of the great National parks in Australia. Beautiful walks, waterfalls and swim holes. A bit of 4x4 driving and nice camp spots. helpful ranger and volunteers.
  • Really enjoyable & easy National Park to visit. Attractions are close together, so we were easily able to visit Florence, Wangi & Sandy Creek in a day. A tribute to good management by NT Parks - well signed and laid out. Sandy Creek falls and swimming hole was the highlight - don't miss!
  • This National Park is a wonderful example of Australian Northern landscape. National parks provide travellers with the opportunity to view unique landscapes and features, and Litchfield doesn't disappoint. We loved the termite mounds, the boardwalk providing the opportunity to view the magnetic mounds, giving a better perspective of these natural living marvels.
  • I have travel the world and the seven seas, and this is my favourite place. Perhaps I'm a little biased because I'm Australian. Though as a gentle Breeze touches my face and I take in the Yellow and green endemic flora and fauna the Red Earth, Majestic waterfalls you can have to yourself if you pick the right time. When I hiked to Sandy Creek Falls I was the only one there and took a swim out to the waterfalls it was a completely surreal Moment in Time and nature.
  • Such an amazing place! Just an hour drive from Darwin CBD. There’s parking facility, toilets, showers, changing rooms, seating areas. I would strongly recommend to carry a towel and set of clothes if you have plans to take dip (which you must!) also carrying some food items would be a smart choice as there’s no restaurants near by. There’s only one which is about 20 mins drive from here, prices are between $12-25 (let’s say $17 for a burger).
