Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum, Bathurst

4.7
Housed in a 19th-century school, Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum holds an impressive collection of fossils and minerals donated by Warren Somerville AM. This brainy hoarder collected fossils and specimens for over 60 years while teaching at various universities and making a name for himself as an orchardist. His collection is now internationally renowned as the Somerville Collection. In 2000, the professor gave his collection to the museum for public viewing, but his generous donation isn't the only draw. A T-Rex skeleton is another centerpiece for the museum, as well as the mineral exhibit where you'll find 2,000 million-year-old garnets on display. • Loved this place! Just a great experience from the moment you set foot on the premises. The well kept old buildings are just a perfect place to see and learn about various minerals from all over the world and more. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, just lovely people. Don't miss walking through the "timeline"
  • A sparkling experience to the history under the ground, a true hidden gem in the heart of the city. Staffs are engaging, knowledgeable and passionate! What a beautiful collection and is recommended to anyone that loves anything shinny. The museum is not big but certainly very interesting.
