Trip Planner: Australia / Victoria / Greater Bendigo / Bendigo / Post Office Gallery (Bendigo Art Gallery)
The Bendigo Post Office is a building on Pall Mall in Bendigo, a provincial city in the Australian state of Victoria. The Post Office backs onto and is partly surrounded by Rosalind Park. The building was built between 1883 and 1887 by the contractors McCulloch and McAlpine and designed by Public Works architect George W. Watson in the Second Empire architectural style. The building shares a great deal with its neighbouring building, the Bendigo Law Courts, and had the same builder, designer and was built at around the same time.Take a look at our Bendigo journey planner to schedule your visit to Post Office Gallery (Bendigo Art Gallery) and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.
Notable features of the building include its 43 metre high clock tower (housing a five bell carillon) and the eleborate facades on all four sides of building. The building was extensively restored between 1978 and 1987.
The building was used as a Post Office up until 1997, currently it is used as Bendigo Tourism's 'Visitor Information Centre'. As the Visitor Information Centre it won Victorian Tourism Awards in 2009 and 2010. It was further inducted into Victorian Tourism's 'Hall of Fame' in 2011. It was also awarded a Tourism Award by QANTAS in 2010, in the category of 'Visitor Information and Services'.
Bendigo Tourism describes the Information Centre as 'Australia's Grandest Visitor Centre', the centre boasts a large information area, an adjoinging gallery space as well as an area devoted to historical displays and museum items.
The building has been included on the Victorian Heritage Register as being of "architectural, historic, and aesthetic significance to Victoria".

Beautiful historic building that has been maintained to impeccable standards, showing just how heady the Bendigo gold rush was, just how much money was in the city, and how grand the architecture in the city is. The building is central to the city, imposing almost, and overlooks the beautiful Rosalind Park, RSL memorial, the Shamrock hotel and law courts. You get a real sense of what 1850-1880 must have been like in the city, with its opulence and largesse so readily displayed. One can see how the city rivaled any other in Australia at the time in terms of grand architecture and is a testament to the people who established the city.
This is a small gallery, part of the Bendigo Art Gallery, with interesting exhibits. We saw an exhibition about tourism to Bendigo. The name of the gallery tells us that it is housed in the old post office, not that it features postal art! Entry is by donation.
