INTRODUCTION TO SCHOOL

Black Mountain School is a secondary specialist school providing innovative and engaging learning programs for students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. Students are catered for throughout the school with specialised programs in communication, sensory development, functional literacy and numeracy, and personal and social development.

The school's curriculum is underpinned by the goals of capacity-building for independence, maximum participation, and quality of life. The curriculum seeks to enable our students by providing a framework that teaches functional skills that is consistent with evidence-based curriculum practice and reflects high expectations and enhances support for teachers and parents, and promotes evidence-based pedagogy.

The school has a particular focus on successful transitions to post-school life. Work education programs are offered both within the school and in external work environments including horticulture, hydroponics, recycling, silk shop, office and clerical, and hospitality and canteen.

The school's excellent range of facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, 'Liberty Swing', sensory garden, upgraded home science area, horticulture training centre, sustainability centre and extended gym support the curriculum. Neighbouring high schools complete peer support, peer leadership, and community service programs at the schools, building the social and spiritual capital of the school. This has resulted in greater opportunities in post-school life for our graduates.

  • If you don't mind a bit of hiking and have time to kill, this is the best place as it's within walking distance from the centre of action.  more »
  • An excellent place to walk in among native plants and a very good view over the city of Canberra. A reasonable level of fitness is needed to walk the slopes but the effort is worthwhile.  more »

  • Unless you are visiting in Black Mountain tower this is not much of a lookout. Rather go to mount Ainslie for the view. What is worthwhile is doing the rough but shaded circle walk from the carpark about three quarters of the way up. No water or refreshment but can be ambled in less than an hour with Canberra, framed in a series of scenic views through the trees.
  • Canberra’s iconic Telstra Tower sits atop of Black Mountain at the heart of Canberra. At the base of this mountain lays The Australian National Botanic Gardens. Telstra Tower allows for uninterrupted views of Canberra and surrounds. It’s an easy drive to the top. And only minutes away from Civic.
