Beautiful memorial located next to Lake Burley Griffin, dedicated to the Merchant Navy. The Merchant Navy operated during the Great War and World War 2, often working as transport or hospital ships for the Australian military. The memorial lists the 568 Australian’s who died during these conflicts while working on these ships. The memorial itself is fascinating. The design was created by Daryl Jackson Alastair Swayn architects, and incorporates a number of clever interpretations within the artwork. The cement pillars represent both a ships bow and also the movement of waves. There is a brilliant example of a constructed amphitheatre, with a persons voice amplified naturally via the shape of the sculpture while standing at the front of the memorial. Well worth taking a walk to see this memorial. There are toilets nearby, easy access for people with mobility issues and it’s located near a number of other significant places/memorials.
