A fascinating collection of artifacts and exhibits housed in a beautiful, colonnaded former convent, James Cook Museum recalls the history of Cooktown and Captain James Cook, from whom the town gained its name. The museum’s collection includes the original anchor of Cook’s ship, HMS Endeavour, as well as a number of items and stories from the town’s early residents. Very lovely place to visit and provides you with extensive history about James Cook and the local Cooktown area. I was also amazed at the size of the anchor when we walked through the front door.
The James Cook Museum Cooktown is located in a former convent now a National Trust property. There is an extensive collection of historic artefacts from the local area. A highlight is the Endeavour Gallery which provides an insight into the 7 weeks Cook & his crew spent here. The anchor and a cannon from the Endeavour are on display. This museum is well worth a visit.
