Trip Planner: Australia / South Australia / Greater Adelaide / Adelaide Hills / Crafers / Cleland Wildlife Park
A large national park just 20 minutes from the city center, Cleland Wildlife Park offers visitors a chance to get up-close and personal with Australia's native fauna. You can feed most animals at this site, or wander at you leisure among kangaroos, wallabies, emus, and waterfowl. There are several displays of dingoes, reptiles, wombats, and koalas, as well as large aviaries housing a variety of native birds. The park is home to a few endangered species, such the bush stone-curlew and bush-tailed bettong. Be sure to advantage of the rare opportunity to be photographed holding a koala, under supervision from the park's wildlife officers. Park facilities include a souvenir shop, cafe, and toilets. I recently went on a mini holiday with my partner for the weekend to Crafers. We decided to book a 'Breakfast with the Birds'; both of us being bird lovers. I have to say that I haven't experienced anything quite like it before. The tour starts bright and early in the morning, before the park opens to the public and when the birds are most active. You will get to meet and be quite up close and personal with a large variety of species. The tour guide is very passionate about the wildlife and is happy to answer any questions you may have. After the tour you can choose to either eat a prepared breakfast at the dining area, or as a packed picnic in the park, I highly recommend eating in the park, as this will compliment your morning very nicely. You may also stay in the park after the breakfast has completed, adding great value to what has already been a valuable experience. This is the perfect thing to do for those who love nature and want to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life for a short while. Cleland Wildlife Park in general is home to many free range Australian native animals. It's the best place to have a true experience with some native wildlife and get lost for the day experiencing the open surroundings. For the price of entry, you are getting much more than you pay for when you enter the park. I will definitely be coming back again and again.
Good paths for walking. Suitable for wheelchair access and prams. Can be steep, but recently refinished and fairly smooth. Non path areas are steep and tend to have unexpected holes from the animals making even places for laying down. Plenty of parking space, if somewhat confusing to find which way to go. Nice cafe facilities and plenty of outside picnic areas. Only potential downside is that the only toilets seem to be at the park entrance, but almost all of the paths loop back to the area.
We love going here so much. It's great for a nice walk alone or for the whole family. It's well worth buying the year long membership. Last year we visited around 40- 50 times. Its a great way to get exercise without it actually feeling like you are. Its lovely in the rain if you have the proper clothing to keep you dry and there is a fire in the cafe that is toasty warm to sit next to and drink tour 2 for 1 beverages that come with having a membership
Only 2 stars because the Koala holding arrangement is very poor with very few people able to participate even after lining up for up to 1.5 hours. Most people who queued up were turned away. Our visitor from the US was very disappointed. Poor form Cleland! You need a better system than first come first served. Better to sell tickets at the entrance so people who come just to hold a Koala can choose not to pay the entrance fee if there are no places left.
Loved the place! Although I am not a big fan of Zoos and Parks, Cleland seemed to really care about the animals in there. The free-roaming waterbirds, emus and potteroos seemed to be at ease with the people. All in all, the animals seemed comfortable and well-taken care of. The staff was also very friendly! Must-go!
