Indo Pacific Marine, Darwin

3.2
#12 of 19 in Parks in Darwin
A privately funded venture to showcase the diversity of the coral reefs, Indo Pacific Marine opened its doors in 1971. The exhibits highlight the biodiversity of Darwin's waters and draw attention to the reef's important function in the biosphere. You'll see tanks inhabited by a colorful array of sea creatures, exhibits on pearling, and perhaps even a chance to see a barramundi feeding. A documentary video and a guided tour will leave well informed about the life of the reef. With our online itinerary creator, Darwin attractions like Indo Pacific Marine can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

  • We were privileged to be shown the life’s work of a couple passionate about Darwin and the marine environment. Yes it is old and hot but we learned heaps and found it thoroughly worthwhile. A treasure...  more »

  • Fantastic. Leave a bit more time than expected. Very interesting if you are a lover of animals and extremely informative about the Marine life. You won't get that from an aquarium. I won't look at aqu...  more »

  • We love this place. John and his wife created something amazing and unique. If you are interested in marine life or seawater tanks, this is the place to go. John is happy to share all his knowledge with you. Yes, other aquariums will show you more for the money you pay, but John and his wife build all of this alone, it’s private and their effort is worth supporting!
  • Where in the world you have come one with such a rare affinity with a marine environment? I can tell you that John is one such person. His intimate knowledge of the world beneath the sea and the interactive nature of the marine ecology is impressive. His simulated environment of the reef ecology is the closest thing I have seen to the “real thing” outside the real thing. His specimen collection gives you an insight and deep appreciation of the world that people just “talk about”. He is an authentic presenter. This museum is a must see for anyone interested in gaining knowledge of the complexity and interactions that exist in the aquatic environment. His knowledge could be the catalyst for helping people realise how important the SeaWorld really is to our survival. I was perplexed at hearing that this was not supported by our government. He was contemplating closing down this wonderful exhibition. I would challenge our political leaders to get an education by seeing first hand the great work John has spent building.
  • It was terrible when we were last here 3 years ago and its gone downhill since. The entire experience is what I imagine it would be to accidentally stumbling onto the set of the Monty Python dead parrot skit mid take or checking into Faulty Towers. Most of the exhibits are precariously clinging to life or have joined the parrot. Positive reviews seem to be from visitors who only ever write one or 2 reviews in their entire life and are on first name basis with the owner, John, I wonder what the explanation is for this?
  • Would never go here again, we were discussed by the racist rants about the aboriginals. We should have asked for our money back.
  • Building needs some maintenance bit, the knowledge shared and the displays were very natural and offered real life experience! We lived it!
