Hamelin Pool Stromatolites, Denham

4.1
Discover Hamelin Pool Stromatolites, peculiar rock-like structures formed by microbes over a period of almost 3,000 years. Shark Bay, a World Heritage Site, is one of only three places in the world where you can see these unusual microbial creations. Discovered in 1956 in an area containing some of the most varied and abundant living examples of these forms in the world, they represent the earliest signs of life on our planet. Stop by the bay’s popular Discovery Center, which provides interactive displays and comprehensive information about the region, and learn all about these "living fossils" and their contribution to the development of early life forms on Earth. • For a few people seriously interested in ancient biology only. Even then, there are stromatolites in more beautiful, more accessible places (like Cervantes). No toilets unless you appease the one caravan park by buying some souvenirs, but it’s in the middle of nowhere - so make sure use that last roadhouse an hour or so before arriving. All there is to see is a pleasant beach with some barely even slightly strange looking rocks, about normal height, shape and colouring for rocks in the water close to the beach - except that signs tell you they’re more special than they look. We did clearly see some fish swimming around here and there between the rocks.
  • Amazing place! The stromatolites are very interesting! There's also a great beach with pristine white sand a crystal clear clean blue water. Great location for some nice sunset pictures. The caravan park is nearby.
