Fraser Island Great Walk, Fraser Island

#4 of 6 in Trails in Fraser Coast
The Fraser Island Great Walk is a long-distance trail in Queensland, Australia. Hikers must be fully self-sufficient and carry water. The walk is rated easy to moderate on a difficulty scale being mostly at sea level and is traversed in one direction.
It leads from Dilli Village, an environmental education camp of the University of the Sunshine Coast, to Happy Valley. The entire 90 km walk, which includes numerous smaller walks branching off the main trail, can be completed in 6 to 8 days. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) provides 8 walkers' camps for which a booking is essential.
The landscape during the walk changes between coastal heathland, mangrove forest, woodland and subtropical rainforest. The crystal-clear lakes and sand dunes are the highlights of this track. Due to the rain season it is better not to do this hike from January to March.
A 40km extension to the walk from Lake Garawongera to Arch Cliffs, was started by volunteers in 2010. This would increase the length of the main trail to 80km.

  • It was an accident that I came across the option of doing parts of the Fraser Island Great Walks via the lodges on the island. They don't seem to advertise it very much. But my friend and I cannot car...  more »
  • Everyone raved about Fraser Island. But we didn't want to be driven across the island in a large group, nor did we want to finance a four-wheel-drive vehicle for us. So we decided on the cheapest and most natural option: on foot. In the Rother hiking guide I had studied the different variants and decided for a 2 day tour with overnight stay in the tent at Lake McKenzie. After the ferry had set up, the hustle and bustle quickly dissipated. Left behind were agitated sand paths, laborious to walk, barren straight. It got better when we came to walker-only trails. Lake McKenzie is a gem! Beautiful! When the day tourists leave the lake, the sun sets behind the trees, around 4 p.m. and then you are all alone. In the very north of the island there should still be real jungle giants. Unfortunately, we have not seen them. The forest and the paths were monotonous. We were disappointed.

  • Beautiful landscape but a lot of sand everywhere! Beautiful lakes.
  • Do not miss a chance to see this place! Rent a 4x4 and drive yourself around the island, listen to the good advice from the locals and you will remember the trip forever!
