Lake McKenzie, Fraser Island

4.9
#1 of 41 in Parks in Fraser Coast
The jewel of Fraser Island is Lake McKenzie, famous for its crystal blue waters and white sands. The area surrounding the lake is the most popular tourist attraction on the island, so it can get crowded during the middle of the day in peak season. The sands around the lake are composed of white silica, and the lake's purity makes it unsuitable for most species. You can swim in this clean water, relax on the sandy beach, or explore the forest surrounding it. A camping area and a picnic area are nearby, along with barbecues. Near the lake is a popular bush trail, where you can see giant fern trees. A visit to Lake McKenzie represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Fraser Island tour planner to plot your vacation.

  • The lake has very clear rain water. The beach is very white sand. Nice for swimming. We saw at least three people flying their drones over the water and beach. Good place to lay to get a sun tan. Ther...  more »
  • This is an amazing lake, the water is so clear and cold. Very peaceful and the day we were there it was really great as there were so few people. Wonderful place to visit!  more »

  • This is a mesmerisingly lovely lake if ever there was one. The walk itself is pure joy - with a stunning view from up above just before a spiralling set of steps leads you to wonderfully white sands and wowing waters. There’s no shortage of people getting tans - therefore shorts and bikinis - and it’s not even 11 O Clock! It’s also a ripe opportunity to have a swim, and there’s few better places to do it. There’s a natural basin that has formed at the bottom of the lake - which is lucky really, as all the water would drain into the ground otherwise. In dry seasons, there can be little or even no water depending on amount of rainfall and heat. Plenty of time for photos in a not to crowded environment, also, with some nice plants and trees for further eye candy.
  • Have always loved this place. The best lake i have ever been to hands down. Best time to go so its quiet is in the early morning or late afternoon otherwise you will struggle to get a park and some real estate on the beach! Eli creek was also just as epic
  • A must visit place if you are on the island lots of sexy backpackers to view here as well
  • Absolutely stunning great place to have a weekend. Take your 4wd for fun
  • A place you will remember for the rest of your life. Paradise in the scrub. Take your bathers and goggles.
