Trip Planner: Australia / Tasmania / Greater Hobart / Hobart / Cascades Female Factory Historic Site
Formerly a workhouse for female convicts in the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is now a museum listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Operational between 1828 and 1856, the factory was an important part of the forced migration of convicts and global developments associated with punishment and reform. The site demonstrates how Britain used penal transportation to expand its sphere of influence, as well as to punish female convicts. Guided tours include short dramatic performances presenting the story of the convicts and their guardians. With our international travel planner, Hobart attractions like Cascades Female Factory Historic Site can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.
Cascades Female Factory Historic Site Reviews
I'm a single man and wasn't too sure what to expect from this "Female Factory"... It wasn't what I expected... :) Anyway, although there's not much of the original structures left, they've done an exc... more »

We did both Port Arthur and Cascades, and while everyone raves about Port Arthur (with good reason) Cascades is definitely worth a visit. As they say, it's the only convict site which tells the story of the female convicts. I highly recommend buying a ticket to the tour, as the self-guided brochure only scratches the surface. Our guide was informative and interesting, with lots of little anecdotes about what life was really like in this 'female factory'. It's a small site so you only need an hour, including the tour, to see everything, but well worth it.
Well done centre showing a harrowing bit of our history. The individual stories and the physical descriptions of the inmates brings a human touch. Sad that so much has been destroyed post prison closure but a great job to reconstruct it. It’s also on the route to the Cascade Brewery and is easily walkable from town.
