Formerly a workhouse for female convicts in the penal colony of Van Diemen's Land, Cascades Female Factory Historic Site is now a museum listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. Operational between 1828 and 1856, the factory was an important part of the forced migration of convicts and global developments associated with punishment and reform. • This was part of our day tour which included Mona. This is a heritage site that was interesting allowing us to see what we cant see now. The place also kept it's original look and feel too.  more »
  • Just a brief 2-3km walk along a wonderful linear park from the Hobart CBD, this historic site shocked us. Over half of Australia's female convicts were sent here to work and produce goods for sale, bu...  more »
  • A very enlightening place. I have read many novels on the convicts but this tour gave a new twist to the story. Lots of bits that no one mentions. The hardship and the real agenda behind the mass expo...  more »

  • Well done centre showing a harrowing bit of our history. The individual stories and the physical descriptions of the inmates brings a human touch. Dad that so much has been destroyed post prison closure but a great job to reconstruct it. It’s also on the route to the Cascade Brewery and is easily walkable from town.
  • A histrionic site done simple and well, the design allows for the stories of the people to shine through. Flo did a fantastic job of guiding our Historic Tour. It would be great if they had the re-enactment tour's in the afternoon also.
  • Went on dramatic tour. It was very good and moving in parts. Gave a deeper understanding of what it was like. Otherwise it left a lot to imagination as to what was there
  • Interesting. Worth it if you like the convict history of Tasmania. Would recommend a guided tour though as there's not a lot of information / signage.
  • A must do if you're visiting Hobart. See the "Her Story" show, that's the best way to understand exactly how it used to be and actually be a part of it. It's interactive and outdoors so bring your jacket and an umbrella.
