Salamanca Market, Hobart

#1 of 126 in Shopping in Tasmania
Each Saturday, Salamanca Market comes to life with dozens of stalls selling the region's best food, crafts, and souvenirs. Situated in front of large sandstone warehouses that have been converted into a maze of craftspeople's shops and restaurants, the market has been a major tourist attraction for decades. It's also a popular weekend meeting place for local families with kids. The warehouses were built in the 19th century to service the whaling industry. Today the market sells a variety of locally made products at inexpensive prices. This sprawling historic district offers opportunities to shop for gifts, drop by popular eateries, and visit the area's art galleries, which exhibit and sell works by local artists. • I’d been to the Salamanca Markets before and this visit definitely didn’t disappoint. Lots of local products and produce, with great quality. Loved the opportunity to chat with store owners  more »

  • Lovely market but visiting during the wooden boat festival meant it was very crowded. Not sure if this also influenced the type of vendors there but I had hoped for more fresh produce stalls selling all the lovely Tasmania treats. While there were some most felt catered to tourist easy take along gifts rather than to fill your home larder.
  • Great shopping village full of arts and crafts shops and specialty items. Even though we were there on a Wednesday so the markets were not running, still worth the trip over to look at the heritage building and great stores. If you like art there are some really great galleries in this perfect setting.
