Salamanca Market, Hobart

#1 of 105 in Shopping in Tasmania
Each Saturday, Salamanca Market comes to life with dozens of stalls selling the region's best food, crafts, and souvenirs. Situated in front of large sandstone warehouses that have been converted into a maze of craftspeople's shops and restaurants, the market has been a major tourist attraction for decades. It's also a popular weekend meeting place for local families with kids. The warehouses were built in the 19th century to service the whaling industry. Today the market sells a variety of locally made products at inexpensive prices. This sprawling historic district offers opportunities to shop for gifts, drop by popular eateries, and visit the area's art galleries, which exhibit and sell works by local artists. • Markets are nice to visit with pubs and cafes surrounding them. Many offer same or similar product and some sell out early if popular.  more »

  • One of the best markets i have been to in Australia and definitely in my top 5 markets i have been to around the world. The locals of Tasmania are so welcoming and extremely friendly. Their talents in arts and crafts, brewing, baking, fresh food are by far the best in Australia. Totally recommend purchasing some truffles, gin, fresh fruit and souvenirs to take home.. I purchased a few treasures that I will forever.
  • Really lovely markets. Nice that you can taste test. Buying food is expensive for small portions. Better to eat at one of the local pubs - they have good lunch specials. Sunday farmers market is better.
