Theatre Royal, Hobart

#3 of 25 in Nightlife in Hobart
The Theatre Royal is Australia’s oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures. In 2012 we celebrate the 175th anniversary of the first performance in 1837.

Leading Australian and international artists have performed here over the decades, including Laurence Olivier, Noel Coward, Lillian Gish, Marcel Marceau, Roy ‘Mo’ Rene, Ruth Cracknell, John Bell and Hugo Weaving. A contemporary centre for performing arts, the Theatre presents an annual program of live theatre, music, dance and entertainment.

Take a guided tour to see the Theatre's elegant auditorium with its central dome, intricate gilded mouldings and rich colours and enjoy a behind-the-scenes glimpse of theatre life. The Theatre Royal has been saved from demolition several times – most notably in the late 1940s when Sir Laurence Olivier was among the many to leap to its defence.

  • Came here to watch comedy, sound projection was good and ushers helpful. The wait to use the toilet is ridiculous- something needs to be done about this. Drink prices a little expensive.  more »

  • Fantastic service! After an initial phone call with a flat 'no', I rang again and spoke on the phone with Matt. Matt was beyond helpful and provided customer service at it's best, helping me organise some additional tickets for latecomers to a family catch up. On the whole, all the team at the Theatre Royal have been extremely helpful and an absolute pleasure to deal with.
  • Amazing old theatre. Good views from the floor, and also from the top level (tried both). Friendly, helpful staff.
