Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Kuranda

Wear bright colors to entice butterflies to land on you at Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, situated in the heart of the city. This popular aviary is home to more than 1,500 tropical butterflies indigenous to Australia. Its impressive collection has it earned a spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the country's largest butterfly exhibit. The sanctuary rears only butterflies native to Australia, and the adjoining lab breeds about 30,000 caterpillars each year. Many visitors use a local trick of smearing honey on their hands to attract butterflies and then quickly snap photos before they take flight again. You can do that, or simply take a long walk along the sanctuary's many walkways, surrounded by flowers, trees, and hundreds of colorful insects. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Kuranda holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Very interesting for a family day out. Free guided tour available. Lots of beautiful butterflies and a look at the laboratory. Small gift shop, lots of other local attractions to see.
  • We went on a pretty packed Wednesday while visiting Kuranda, and my wife and I were quite a bit undecided about which activity package would work best. The woman at the counter walked through her options and helped me come to a solution that gave us the chance to have a leisurely time there, which was impressive. At home in the US, I feel like I would have been upsold, so props to her there. Then, we went into the Sanctuary. There was a free tour, and our wonderful guide had a real passion for butterflies and a great sense of humor. It's not a huge facility, but it was much more interesting to learn about what they do and about butterflies rather than just standing about and waiting for a butterfly to alight on you. All in all, we had a nice leisurely time in the Sanctuary, saw some awesome butterflies, and had a few land on us as well. Most of the photos are in my bigger camera or I would attach them here. Kudos to the staff for their dedication!
