Malanda Falls, Malanda

#4 of 8 in Things to do in Malanda
The Malanda Falls is a cascade waterfall on the North Johnstone River, located in the Tablelands Region in the Far North of Queensland, Australia.
The falls are situated on the Atherton Tableland, near the town of Malanda. They are within the Malanda Falls Conservation Park.
The North Johnstone River is prone to significant flooding in the wet season. There are two 20-minute walks in the surrounding rainforest, with a chance of seeing a tree kangaroo. The visitor centre books guided walks with aboriginal guides. It also has displays on the rainforest, geology and history of Malanda. The visitor centre and museum burnt down in 2010 and was rebuilt in 2013.
The swimming pool and associated infrastructure is very popular with locals and tourists. The Malanda Falls Swimming Pool is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register as an early example of tourist infrastructure in North Queensland.

  • A must when visiting or passing through Malanda. Such a calm and peaceful place. Always refreshes. A visit to the nearby information centre provides a lot of detail about the area.  more »
  • While the nearby Visitor Centre is very modern and interesting, the Malanda Falls itself were far less spectacular than expected. The small waterfall flows into a concrete pool with an entrance ladder. You feel more like an outdoor pool than nature. So we didn't go swimming. On the other hand, we took the nearby tour of the forest, hoping to see one of the shy tree kangaroos. But we haven't seen anything other than some nice red parrots. At dusk you probably have a better chance of success. Verdict: No need. Other waterfalls in the Atherton Tablelands are more interesting.
