Carrick Hill, Mitcham

See a large collection of drawings, sculptures, antiques, and paintings at historic Carrick Hill, which once served as home to Sir Edward Hayward, a prominent local businessman. Designed to resemble an English manor, the house was completed in 1939. Today, the property is one of few such period sites in Australia to have survived virtually unchanged and with most of its original furnishings still in place. Original owners fitted the house with an impressive inner staircase, which they brought all the way from Europe, where they spent a year-long honeymoon. Today, the property hosts regular themed art and social history exhibitions, as well as other cultural events. • I can't believe that in 21 years living in Adelaide, I had not visited Carrick Hill House. Nestled in the Adelaide Hills, the house is easy to get to and not expensive for entry, about $17. This house...  more »

  • Never tire of this fantastic space. I have been coming to Carrick ever since I moved to Adelaide over 15 years, while the cafe is not what it used to be the extensive gorgeous grounds that you can spend a whole afternoon meandering through, or simply retire to the lawn areas and enjoy the view are worth it, but a cup of coffee and sit back and relax. If you have never toured the house you really should do so.
  • Stunning home and gardens. We will be going back to explore the gardens another day. The views are just lovely. The diverse range of plants and trees is amazing. The colours are beautiful and that's in winter! In spring it will be extraordinary! I can't wait for Spring there! That house is fabulous to just wander through at your own pace. So many talking points no matter what your interests might be. The house is closed for July but when its open again, go and see for yourself how magnificent it is. The garden has a children's trail to follow that illustrates little scenes and ideas from childhood stories and the house has a short project sheet that the kids use to find different pieces within the home. That might give them an interest while the adults appreciate more inside. Younger children will be able to find the objects from the pictures on the sheet. There is also cafe snacks and lunches. It would be a nice way to spend at least a couple of hours.
  • Summer is coming. Wipe away the dreariness of another long Winter and explore this beautiful estate, it's sumptuous gardens, and it's walking trails including a children's storybook trail...oh, and maybe take in a bevvie or two and unwind. Pet and children friendly. Cost for this day out? $0.00! Enjoy
  • Beautiful spot to wander the gardens and explore the old homestead. Cafe available. Story book walk is lovely for children of all ages. Spring is the perfect time to visit
  • I could not find the ticket prices on the carrickhill.sa.gov.au website. I searched for ticket information on every page and even ran searches (from the search box in the top right hand corner of the site) for the words "price", "tickets", "cost" and "$". However, none of those searches returned the cost of tickets. I even clicked on "Site Map" but again there was no item or link to the ticket prices. I opened the Contact page to write a complaint or suggestion, I was astonished to find the ticket prices on that page. Why are you ;hiding; such important information which should be more easily found or accessible on that site. Yes I would be embarrassed by the cost of an adult ticket of $17.00. I guess that is the reason. Cut the price to $10 and then you won't be ashamed to hide the ticket prices on the Contact page which is intended for complaints and feedback. On a positive note, the website in every other respect is really well designed and beautifully laid out - and a pleasure to look at.
