Located on Mount Eliza and overlooking Perth Water, State War Memorial houses the Cenotaph, a well-known city landmark. Erected in honor of all Australian soldiers whose remains are buried elsewhere, the Cenotaph represents an "empty tomb." Anzac Day is a national holiday observed in April to honor Australians and New Zealanders who served in the military and died in wars and peacekeeping operations. On Anzac Day, a service is held at the memorial that attracts over 40,000 visitors. At this site, you can also visit the flame of remembrance and a pool of reflection, inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000. At the eternal fire there is a stone bench that you have to try out. One must sit in the corner next to the inscription Gallipoli the other right on the other side next to the inscription Hindenburg line. The first whispers something into the stone wall and the second hears it crystal clear on the other side. Very mysterious!
I would say this is a must visit place in Perth and it's FREE! This is a well maintained memorial, great insight into past history. more »
Probably one of my favorite places in WA. Kings park is absolutely beautiful no matter what time of day and there’s always a sense of peace every time i drop by to visit with the intent to clear my mind. It’s also a great spot to catch a glimpse and appreciate the entire city line.
A beautiful and solemn memorial. We were here for the Anzac day Dawn service. It was a beautiful ceremony as we watched the sun rise over the city . If you are ever considering attending a dawn service I would highly recommend the one held her each year in late April. Dont forget to bring your camera to catch the beautiful autumn sunrise.
