As the country's largest railway museum, National Railway Museum Port Adelaide contains over 100 exhibits from both public and private railway operators in Australia. Tour historic buildings such as the Goods Shed, which stands as a fine example of 19th-century timber-beamed buildings that the South Australian Railway used, and the signal cabin that the Woodville station onces used. Walk through displays detailing the history of women in Australian railways and iconic rail journeys in Australia and relax in a 1947 cafeteria car meant to resemble a carriage from an Agatha Christie novel. National Railway Museum Port Adelaide Reviews
We have visited a few railway museums in our travels, but this is the best we have seen, huge undercover pavilions neat, clean and well looked after collections. The whole museum was very well laid ou... more »

Most of the train are prohibited for entry and therefore you can only look into the cabin from outside. The mini train ride is entertaining, with the train doing two laps around the facility. A big train is only run for events. There are many impressive cabins on display. Drinks and ice cream is also available for purchase. The museum reminded people of the day when trains used to be huge, with its wheels the size of a six foot man. The train ride will not run if the temperature is above about 35 as I recall. Visiting the museum also entitle you to 25% off at both the aviation museum and maritime museum. Staff is friendly and are willing to help, and defence discount is considered.
It wasn't what I expected, but my two year old son had a great time anyway. He loved the little train ride that went around the grounds every half hour, we went 3 times. He enjoyed exploring the trains that you could access, and loved watching the miniature train display. Myself, I found it a bit boring, and would of liked to be able to explore more of the trains, but most of them have no access, I guess to preserve them. It's also very quiet in there. The staff were extremely friendly too, and if my son wanted to, i would go back!
