The signs say Tour Only but that doesn’t stop you from driving up to gate and walking 10 mins to site. Sad and depressing history but lovely views more »
Located across the Port Arthur harbour of Mason Cove, is Point Puer. In 1834 a boy's prison was built here to separate boys aged eighteen and under from older prisoners. Some 3000 misguided and neglected children, the youngest who had just turned 9, were transported from England to this reformatory. A 14 year-old who stole a hat was sentenced for life and transported to this miserable place. Point Puer Boys Prison ceased operation in 1849 and today only scattered ruins remain of the former prison.
