  • Include this tower in tour of the whole site, its just in front of Commander House which has been beautifully restored.  more »
  • An amazing view up here. Another stunning piece of Australian history. The masonry is beautiful. It’s brilliant that there was anything left after the riots when the prison closed.  more »

  • The Guard Tower on Champ St, with its flanking walls and turrets, is another one of the remaining ruins at the historic Port Arthur Penal Settlement. As well as being one of two towers that watched over the penal site, the Watch Tower served as a storeroom for guns and ammunition. It also had a guard room and cells for holding civilian offenders and female convict servants. The Union Jack was flown over the tower when a ship was entering or leaving the harbor and whenever a dignitary of note was visiting the site. The viewing platform at the front of the tower provides a stunning view across the cove. In 1839, Captain Laplace wrote of the tower and described it as “a sort of tower in the medieval style, from the top of which the soldier on duty can observe all that goes on in the surrounding area and look to the security of the homes of the principal officers of the establishment.” The photographs included here, show the ruins of the Watch Tower as it stands today and for comparison, I have also included an historical photo taken back in the 1913.
  • Do the introductory tour first then wander amongst the ruins.
