Penguin Island, Rockingham

4.1
Situated inside the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, Penguin Island is home to a colony of little penguins, the largest population of birds in Western Australia. Regular ferries carry tourists to and from the island, and access is also available by private boat. Only a small population of captive penguins can be viewed, but the island offers many other sights, including nesting seabirds and a large colony of pelicans, numbering nearly 500 birds. You can also swim, snorkel, take kite-boarding lessons, join kayaking tours, or simply enjoy a picnic. Remember to take your own food and drink, as none can be purchased on the island. • I love birds and this was more bird island than Penguin - I know they go out to sea to fish and live in burrows but apart from the Penguins in the visitor centre - not a one to be seen! Also the walk ...  more »

  • Penguins are adorableee!!!
  • We loved it! From being on the boat to walking around the island and watching penguins splash here and there. Beautiful place, great experience.
  • Stunning island views with the sun shining beautifully on a winter day. We were guided by a tour guide and allowed only 30 minutes on the island during the breeding season of the penguins. Glad we are not totally exploiting it for tourism. We saw many seagull chicks almost as big as their parents but didn't see any penguins, we were told they routinely go out hunting at the sea at the same time everyday.
  • We loved it here. Although it seems a bit on the pricey side for the ferry, the kids had a great time. It's best to get a window seat so they can see out at the fantastic view on the ferry. Don't forget to pack a picnic if staying for lunch, although there is a cafe at the mainland, because on the island there are no shops. If you want to see the penguins, you will needed to purchase the discovery centre passes too. Great day out.
  • Considering it was off season got 90 minute tour, including 30 minute walk and the rest of these time on the water hunting sea lion and dolphins! Reasonably priced
