The Cleve Gardens has few facilities for tourists, but is a place where local indigenous people have been known to meet under the old trees, close by the sea. more »
The drinking fountain was a memorial to Victorian trooper Knox (a soldier not a policeman) who drowned during the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. It was stolen or damaged decades ago and a metal cut out now represents the size and shape of the fountain. Adam G is incorrect in naming the fountain after Mr Cleve. Vagrants here in the recent past (2 decades ago) were pretty messy and unsanitary but they have now moved on or died out as many were alcoholics.
Named after Sali Cleve, the Cleve gardens located on the corner of Beaconsfield Parade and Fitzroy Street, is a small but beautiful garden. The gardens has a number of well established trees, including a large fig tree, which create a canopy over the gardens. There's an ornate drinking fountain which was installed in 1911 in memory of Cleve who designed the gardens. In 1997 the City of Port Phillip erected a cultural marker bearing symbols of the traditional Koori owners of the site - the Bunurong and Wurundjeri peoples. The park has also won official recognition as an aboriginal meeting place by being listed in the Aboriginal Historic Places Register.
