  • We spend a long week-end on Maria, staying in the penitentiary. We took over our bikes and you need to remember to take over everything you need (its only $10 a bag. We tool our large back packs and a...  more »

  • Full day excursion to Maria Island. With the ferry from Triabunna. Maria Island in the years 1800 was also a place where they sent to prisoners, later there is some industry established (cement works and quarry) but now the national park. In Darlington, the only "village" on the island can you remember what see ruins of the prisoners age. Also here is the only place you could possibly spend the night. You can make beautiful walks on Maria Island. A must is certainly the Painted Cliffs, keep in mind the tide. Cliffs only accessible at low tide. In Darlington, you can also rent mountain bikes to explore the island. The island is also rich in wildlife. Wombats, kangaroos, .... On the island were also introduced but Tasmanian Devils back to spotting you should be having much luck.

  • It's tough to find a place like this in Australia, a place where history and nature combines to create a perfect holiday retreat for those looking to explore. Walking trails, cycling trails, no cars, access only by boat and the only food is what you take. And wombats everywhere. A few Tassie Devils, and plenty of Geese as well amongst the Joeys. Seemingly so much to do in so little time. A definite highlight of the holiday
  • Loved my visit here. Was an amazing place full of history. Well worth it.
  • Had a wonderful time here! No cars in the island but you can hire bikes for $33 a day in it's totally worth! There are three campsites, two are free and you have to walk a few hours to arrive there. The other one it's placed near the ferry arrival and has kitchen, drinkable water and showers. Be ready to meet a lot of wild animals. Totally loved this place
  • Fantastic views and walks. Historical ruins tell the story of this place.
  • We just spent a great day on Maria Island, we hired mountain bikes for $33 each for the day as there are no cars allowed, the roads can be rough and sandy in places but nothing that these well maintained bikes cannot handle. We only rode to Return Point which is about half way along the island and returned to the dropoff point and did some more exploring, there is lots to see and there are native animals everywhere.
