Kata Tjuta, Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

Although Ayers Rock 25 km (16 mi) gets all of the fame, Kata Tjuta is pretty spectacular in its own right. This group of 36 rocky domes also rises mysteriously out of the flat Outback, with the highest peaking 546 m (1,791 ft) above the plain. If you're keeping score, that's 198 m (650 ft) higher than Ayers Rock. If you've come all this way to see the more famous of the rock formations, don't miss this one. Put Kata Tjuta at the forefront of your travel plans using our Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park vacation planner.

  • Mind blowing. The valley of winds walk is unforgettable. Take plenty of water, some snacks and a good camera.
  • A different shape than Uluru, but just as spectacular! And only 40 kms away. Two of the most important landscapes in our beautiful country right next door to each other.
  • The walk from the inside is interesting. The best part is the view from the viewing area esspically in low light. The colours are spectacular.
  • Definitely must visit while you're in the Ayres Rock area.
  • Such majesty. Such sublimity. Honestly, I reckon the Olgas are completely underrated, and are quite possibly just as impressive as the mighty Uluru. Unfortunately, discovering the Olgas meant discovering, too, the last remains of John (pictured below... or elsewhere... wherever you’re able to find the picture.) His false teeth survived the harsh Aussie climate, however, the rest of him was not so successful. We can only hope that the dingoes had a ripper meal and wasted not the remainder of John. May his memory subsist forever in our minds, and his false teeth be a reminder of the dangers the Land Down Under poses.
