Granite Island, Victor Harbor

Granite Island, also known by the Ramindjeri people as Nulcoowarra, is a small island next to Victor Harbor, South Australia, about 80 km south of South Australia's capital city, Adelaide. Although there are no permanent residents, there are buildings and shelters on the island, including a cafe. It is a popular tourist attraction, particularly for people wishing to see little penguins (commonly called "fairy penguins") which live there. The island also supported resident wallabies in the 1980s which captivated visiting tourists. The island is accessible across a causeway from the mainland, either on foot or by catching an antique horse-drawn tram. As of 2015, the private company Oceanic Victor intends to use the island as a departure point to ferry tourists to a new tourist attraction in adjacent waters. Tourists will be able to enter an aquaculture seacage where they will be able to swim with and hand feed southern bluefin tuna, and observe other South Australian marine species.Little penguin colonyIn 1987 a joint State and local government committee was formed "to consider improvements to Granite Island." The Committee recommended that the island's tourism potential be maximised, while protecting its environment. The Committee also specifically recommended the "protection of the fairy penguin population."In 1989, the island's rat and rabbit populations were subjected to culling, with poison used to reduce rat numbers. Rats are known to raid the nests of little penguins. The island's wallaby population was also reduced, with animals relocated as far afield as Cummins on Eyre Peninsula.

  • Nice little island, don't order the gourmet toasted sandwich from the cafe. Didn't get baby spinach in it. Only a couple slices of ham, few sun dried tomatoes and some ricotta on white bread. Not wort...  more »
  • Have not had a walk around the island for ages. Not since its 'additions'. Lovely clean walks, fabulous views in every direction. Hideous sculptures randomly placed in apparently meaningless positions...  more »

  • Lovely place, I can stay here forever. Can go for short hiking. I reach nearly to the splashing of the milky sea water on the rocks. It was a great experience. Cool breeze. If u r lucky and like monitors, U can find some running around. Recommend u to go there anytime except winter season. Can take lots of memorable photos.
  • BIIIG ISLAND!! bigger than your think :D so much big it hurts my brain!! so big I could walk all over it for hours and hours on end :) so big that it even has a cafe on it! Can you believe that!?!?! No ranch at cafe though, so 1 star.
  • Went on a rainy day. Couldn’t spot any penguins but saw a seal and few other birds. The walk on the bridge was nice too.
  • Great to walk around and see natural rock formations. Tram ride is quaint.
  • This place was amazing for all ages. First of all it had a horse drawn carriage for anybody not fond of walking across the bridge. But the best bit was the views make sure you grab a camera before you go because you are going to want to take pictures. I do recommend visiting.
