Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Do some cultural sightseeing at Mona and Hobart Convict Penitentiary. You'll enjoy a bit of beach vacationing at Long Beach and Bellerive Beach. When in Hobart, make a side trip to see Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton, approximately 30 minutes away. There's still lots to do: shop like a local with Salamanca Market, get to know the fascinating history of Battery Point Sculpture Trail, look for gifts at Hammer and Hand Metal Gallery, and contemplate the long history of Cascades Female Factory Historic Site.

Sydney to Hobart is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train, ferry, and bus; or do a combination of bus and ferry. Traveling from Sydney in August, things will get little chillier in Hobart: highs are around 15°C and lows about 4°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 6th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Port Arthur.
