Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Step off the beaten path and head to Tahune Forest AirWalk and Mawson's Hut Replica Museum. Visit Port Arthur Historic Site and Constitution Dock for their historical value. Change things up with these side-trips from Hobart: Willie Smiths Organic Apple Cider (in Huonville), Tasmanian Devil Unzoo (in Taranna) and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (in Brighton). There's still lots to do: stroll through Seven Mile Beach, enjoy the sand and surf at Bellerive Beach, see the interesting displays at Mona, and hike along Franklin River Nature Trail.
