Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Relax by the water at Long Beach and Bellerive Beach. Step out of the city life by going to Mount Wellington and Maria Island National Park. Get out of town with these interesting Hobart side-trips: Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary (in Brighton) and St John the Baptist Chuch (in Buckland). There's lots more to do: shop like a local with Salamanca Market, steep yourself in history at Hobart Convict Penitentiary, examine the collection at Mona, and head off the coast to Macquarie Island.

Traveling by car from Port Arthur to Hobart takes 1.5 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In October in Hobart, expect temperatures between 20°C during the day and 9°C at night. Finish your sightseeing early on the 22nd (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Launceston.
