Cairns

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Your inner history buff will appreciate Historic Village Herberton and St Monica's Cathedral. Daintree Discovery Centre and Bones and Jones are good opportunities to explore the local culture. Explore Cairns' surroundings by going to Port Douglas (Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas, Four Mile Beach, & more), Palm Cove (Hartley's Crocodile Adventures & Palm Cove Beach) and Thornton Beach (in Thornton Beach). Spend the 24th (Wed) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's still lots to do: trek along Esplanade Boardwalk, enjoy the sand and surf at Trinity Beach, take in the exciting artwork at Doongal Aboriginal Art, and relax and float downstream with a rafting and tubing tour.
