Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Kick off your visit on the 24th (Thu): stroll around City Park. Keep things going the next day: indulge your taste buds at Food & Drink, take in the views from Alexandra Suspension Bridge, and then look for all kinds of wild species at Cataract Gorge Reserve.

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
You'll find plenty of places to visit near Coles Bay: East Coast Natureworld (in Bicheno) and Melshell Oysters (in Swansea). Spend the 28th (Mon) exploring nature at Freycinet National Park. Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Step out of Hobart to go to Brighton and see Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, which is approximately 30 minutes away. On the 1st (Fri), give your taste buds a day to remember with a local gastronomic tour. And it doesn't end there: admire the natural beauty at Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, snap pictures at Richmond Bridge, indulge your thirst for a good beer at Cascade Brewery, and steep yourself in history at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site.

Getting from Port Arthur to Hobart by car takes about 1.5 hours. Other options: take a bus. In October in Hobart, expect temperatures between 20°C during the day and 9°C at night. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 4th (Mon) to allow time to travel back home.
