Lying in the Tamar Valley and surrounded by forested hills, the grid-patterned city of Launceston boasts shaded avenues, vibrant street life, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Step off the beaten path and head to Woolmers Estate and Brickendon Colonial Farm Village. Visiting Barnbougle Dunes and Tamar Island Wetlands will get you outdoors. Step out of Launceston with an excursion to Holm Oak Vineyards in Rowella--about 38 minutes away. There's still lots to do: identify plant and animal life at Cataract Gorge Reserve and take in the dramatic scenery at Lilydale Falls.

Sydney to Launceston is an approximately 5-hour flight. You can also do a combination of flight and bus; or do a combination of train, ferry, and bus. Traveling from Sydney in January, things will get a bit cooler in Launceston: highs are around 28°C and lows about 12°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 28th (Mon) to allow enough time to drive to Coles Bay.

Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
Get in touch with nature at Spiky Beach Conservation Area and Freycinet National Park. Get a sense of the local culture at Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Craigie Knowe Vineyard. Step out of Coles Bay to go to Swansea and see Melshell Oysters, which is approximately 46 minutes away. And it doesn't end there: do a tasting at Devil's Corner Cellar Door, see majestic marine mammals with a dolphin and whale watching tour, and walk along Wineglass Bay Lookout.

Snaking up the side of a rounded, tree-dotted hill, Hobart sits between Tasmania’s sprawling mountains and the vast estuary of the River Derwent.
Get outdoors at Seven Mile Beach and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Get a sense of the local culture at North Hobart and Sullivans Cove. Spend the 6th (Wed) wandering through the wild on a nature and wildlife tour. There's lots more to do: kick back and relax at Opossum Bay Beach, stroll through Nutgrove Beach, learn about winemaking at Puddleduck Vineyard, and contemplate in the serene atmosphere at St. David's Cathedral.
