Overlooking one of Tasmania's most scenic strips of coastline and serving as the gateway to Freycinet National Park, Coles Bay is home to just 500 permanent residents.
Start off your visit on the 16th (Thu): get up close to creatures of the deep with a dolphin and whale watching tour, then trek along Wineglass Bay Lookout, and then visit a coastal fixture at Cape Tourville Lighthouse. Get some historical perspective at Cascades Female Factory Historic Site and Hobart Convict Penitentiary. Museum of Old and New Art and Mawson's Hut Replica Museum are good opportunities to explore the local culture. When in Hobart, make a side trip to see Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary in Brighton, approximately 30 minutes away.
