Cairns

A neat, cosmopolitan city of shaded plazas and laid-back neighborhoods, Cairns serves as a popular base for exploration of the surrounding region and the Great Barrier Reef, as well as a center for watersport activities like surfing or waterskiing.
Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Daintree Rainforest - Cooper Creek Wilderness and Spas & Wellness. Get out of town with these interesting Cairns side-trips: Walu Wugirriga Lookout (in Cow Bay) and Opal Reef (in Port Douglas). Spend the 20th (Wed) among aquatic life with a scuba or snorkeling tour. There's still lots to do: head off the coast to Michaelmas Cay, take in the dramatic scenery at Josephine Falls, meet the residents at Cairns Aquarium, and pause for some serene contemplation at St Monica's Cathedral.

Getting from Sydney to Cairns by flight takes about 6 hours. Other options: drive; or take a train. Plan for somewhat warmer temperatures traveling from Sydney in March, with highs in Cairns at 36°C and lows at 27°C.
